New things in the works

It has been a labour of love, but my new website and company name and identity are finally ready to be released. I am in sunny Brazil enjoying a volunteer experience / vacation but look for a link with my new logo and specialties upon my return in mid-May.

I have loved running my business and sharing my thoughts on decor with all of you. I am now moving into two specialties: condos & kids. Cannot wait to share them with you!

One Of A Kind Show: Condo report

Spring is in the air- and it feels even more so walking the bright aisles of the One Of A Kind Spring Show and Sale. Running this Mar 31 - April 4 at Exhibition Place you'll find your usual: yummy food, artisan crafts- but if you think the show is more craft than class- you are very mistaken. Here is my report on the best modern, trendy pieces for any urban condo dweller:
It was an absolute pleasure to meet Amy Migicovsky of Rock My Soul. Her pillows have a definite west coast vibe (she studied Interior Design in San Fran) and she hand screens her designs on organic cotton. LOVE.

Blair Chivers creates urban wall art on wood panels. Look for whimsical expressions in smart typography. Hang a collection or let one speak for itself- the clever messages speak volumes.
Even your salt and pepper shakers can have style. In a multitude of colours and silhouettes take a crack at Sylvain Tremblay.
At a great price point for the show, these drum shades from metal workers sodi designs brings style and function to your space. They can also customize a light with your own design.

IDS10 Highlights

Armed with my camera, my notebook, a latte and an open mind (although latte was disposed of upon arrival as it proved to be quite a juggling act) I traversed the halogen lit hallways of the Interior Design Show in Toronto.

IDS10 in its new lovely location (and so convenient- thank you IDS team!) was well worth the visit (and caffeine disposal). Here are a few of my favourite highlights, stay tuned for an inspiring report from the Pecha Kucha presentation & ultimate spaces.

The Monk lounge by Templar provided a spot for a posh picnic (complete with indoor tree). Designed by Rhed, I loved the contrast of the organic and the more industrial elements- note the inflatable balloon dropped ceiling.

Graphic chair by snob- a new store on my radar.

Snob's orange lacquered table with nail head detailing- incroyable.

Of course IKEA does it again- I love these scarves tied loosely on the backs of the chairs- so cozy.

A simple graphic runner- and onions! An unexpected centerpiece that matches the colour of the cabinetry so well.

And those PS lights- so dreamy.

I love the colour blocking and modular approach to this bookshelf in the bauhaus booth.

Another fabulous display case at the LEMA booth.

Clayton Budd of 64th and Queen designed this winning rug for the Weavers Art competition. It makes me want more argyle in my life.

And last but not least the Optik pink bathtub. Mary Kay worthy.

I am in love:

Welcome to mjölk, the new kid on the design block (the block being the Juncion in Toronto). Why am I in love?

The products (Scandinavian & Japanese goodies) speak for themselves but the interior of the store is what caught my attention.

Reclaimed natural wood against some cloud white will always be a winner. And some cute toys to begin my son's education in the Scandinavian vernacular:

IA:MM Showroom facelift

A resolution for many around this time of year is to be more organized. With this in mind I was hired by Toronto showroom IA:MM Inc. to re-design and de-clutter their chic but overcrowded Toronto office. With some clear plastic pockets, a simple demure paint treatment and some beautiful Namarococo paper here are some progress shots- a great (and stylish) way to start off the year!

I am very excited for the One of a Kind Show this year. It has been a while since I've been and my crafty senses are tingling for some hand made goodness. There has been a real shift in decorating to the handmade- to items with history: antiques, reclaimed items, pieces with a story.

It's inspiring to me to see homes that are as colourful and character filled as their owners. And a visit to the One of a Kind Show is sure to inject some of this uniqueness in your home.

The One of a Kind Show runs November 26-December 6 at the Direct Energy Centre in Toronto.

Working from home: What I've learned

Lately I've been inspired by blogs like Life is Glossy and Her Bad Mother that have a more personal (and sometimes a refreshingly honest) focus. So following up on my brief reflection of the past two years, here's a few things I have learned about working from home / being your own boss: the good, the bad, and the (sometimes very) ugly.

1. Pro- You can dress comfortably when you work from home. Goodbye pantyhose. Con- when your spouse gets home at 6pm and you're still in pyjamas, this is a problem. Casual Friday does not include bunny slippers.

2. Pro- You save time because you don't commute. Con- You justify watching Gossip Girl episodes on-line because, well... you can justify many things when you're your own boss. Which brings me to...

3. Pro- No one watching over your shoulder, you control how you spend your day. Con- No one watching over your shoulder, you control how you spend your day. Twitter is a wonderful marketing tool, but is reading about what @RyanSeacrest had for breakfast income generating? Not really.

4. Pro- When I am productive and in the zone, I am able to accomplish a lot as I have quiet and no interruptions. Con- I do miss interacting with other creative adults on a daily basis. My son hasn't quite mastered the skill of a good brainstorming session (he has mastered sucking on his big toe, however. Go John!)

5. Pro- setting your own schedule allows you to brunch, to shop, to take vacations at whim. Con- there is no con to this. Ha ha! I absolutely love being able to take a long lunch in the middle of the day, meet with creative peeps like Jen of Rambling Renovators, sit front row at a fashion show, or leave John with my mom and have some quiet time. The flexibility is great, as long as you can manage it all.

6. Pro- I have learned that balance is so important when you work from home. Con- I suck at achieving balance. I sucked at it before I had a baby (ie. workaholic, constant e-mail checker) and after having a baby, I learned I really suck at it. But having a baby has really reinforced where my priorities lie (my faith, my family) and that e-mails will still be there in the morning and yes, they can wait (thus why I don't think I will ever get a Blackberry).

Balance is a whole other ballgame and deserves a post of its own. But for now, I am turning off the computer, closing the ten tabs I have opened (all opened to design blogs, PS) and spending time with the men in my life that mean the most to me (what a classically cheesy ending. But I love cheese. I need more of it in my life).

This was a wonderful room to work on- little Orion enjoys custom made curtains for privacy (and peek-a-boo). Great deals include DIY art with 4' x 4' canvas frames from Deserres, a lofty IKEA Besta storage unit, a custom made crib bumper from an IKEA pillowcase, and a few simple IKEA fames hung with those handy 3M strips. Personal time: a tired but happy and fulfilled mommy!

Reflection: I am coming up on my second year of running my interior decorating business. And what a wonderful / exhausting / exhilarating / messy two years it has been.

The best (and worst) of the last two years:

- Getting recognized as an HGTV designer on the subway. (Getting recognized on the WORST hair, makeup and wardrobe days)

- Designing a table for Willow Breast Cancer Support Eat to the Beat. (I was so sleep deprived at the event because I was up all night prepping)

- Shooting a pilot for a new HGTV show (that won't be going to air), but learning that there is interest to shoot another this year

- Memorizing Benjamin Moore paint chip codes (always misplacing the decks!!!!)

- Understanding what a double roll of wallpaper means (ordering way too few and panicking the day of installation)

- Making mistakes (sometimes costly ones) and learning to accept that I'm not perfect and with failure much learning comes

- Meeting incredible clients and being invited to be a part of their family and lives, one room at a time.

Oh- and of course, the best part of the last two years:

- Marrying the love of my life, and 9 months later giving that love a name (ie having my baby John!) While it has been an interesting challenge (and flat out struggle at times) being a mompreneur, the rewards of being able to raise my son and build a business have been so good.

Makeover Monday: More Pillows at Sean's

I'm in love with this new coffee table from Structube. I've always loved the look of the glass but thought it was too impractical. Thanks to a chic white lacquered shelf practical can also look very good.

DIY Friday: Last Minute Halloween Inspiration

With baby and business I am sometimes tardy in my holiday decor- this year being no exception. So here are a few quick and easy ways to get your house ready for tomorrow's big day. (PS- I bought candy way on sale at Zellers, yesterday, they are already starting to mark down items)

The Sack-o-lanterns from Ready Made are so simple. Cut out your desired shape, throw some sand in the bottom, and light a votive candle and voila- no messy carving if you are strapped for time! I will be doing mine this afternoon...

From the poetic home a great way to use that typewriter you've got lying around. Type your visitors a scary message and leave it on your front stoop. I will be doing this one as well!

These are just amazing from decodir. Take a garbage bag, cut out a scary shape, tape it to your window and keep your lights on! It will cast an illuminated shadow for your visitors tomorrow night. Your your indoor guests, look how chic this table is. Proves that 99 cent spider webs can look classy. And of course, using regular food and coming up with spooky names for them is just so easy and simple.

What will my baby be for Halloween?

Just kidding. But this so so sweet!

Wicked Deal Wednesday: Eames plywood repro

For my client Sean (I just posted progress shots here) we are adding a touch of mid century modern to his brand new condo- and I am just ecstatic I have been able to find an incredible spot for reproduction pieces (and very good ones at that) in Toronto.

Here is my lovely plywood chair being carried to the refinishers on the subway at Osgoode station. I was able to take it home from most! at Gladstone and Queen W for the throw away price of $129. Amazing!

As designer on the first season on HGTV's Marriage Under Construction, I got to work with the lovely and talented Vanessa Ray. Little did we know that a mere two years later I would be married, with a baby and running my own business and she would be on Broadway and a soap star!

Here is the update: since starring in MUC, she played Olive in the National Tour of Spelling Bee, she has guest stared in the HBO comedy Bored to Death, she can be currently seen as Teri Ciccone on As The World Turns, and I just learned she'll be playing Chrissy on Broadway in Hair. On Broadway- New York readers go watch her now!

Thanksgiving Treats

At the Canning house we hosted Thanksgiving a week early so we could relax with our large extended family this coming weekend- bonus, it means I get to share how I decorated my own table with you before the turkey festivities begin.

I was very inspired by Montreal stylist Nicola Marc's lesson in the November Style At Home on painting the stems of pumpkins silver- I took it up a notch and sprayed mine high gloss white and set them on dollar store candle holders.

My runner is a remnant of fabric from a client's pillows. Finally, I clustered a few more pumpkins in their natural state on my fire place for my festive foray. Enjoy!

IA:MM Showroom gets it's own makeover

IA:MM Showroom, a must stop in Toronto for buyers from Canada and the US (they represent glorious clothing and accessory lines including Love Quotes, Rebecca Minkoff, White & Warren and more!) just got a little Lisa added to their Richmond Street location.

In a two day blitz, we reorganized the space to make the buying experience seamless. With simple IKEA frames and shelving, each brand now has its own space to breath!

Makeover Monday: Modern Mildred

Last week after a delightful visit with a client in the Liberty Village, I snuck in a leisurely lunch at the new Mildred's Temple Kitchen (85 Hanna Ave.)

The food is just as yummy as the interiors. Designed by du Tois Architects this glossy and cosy nook boasts fresh green accents, walnut tables and Knoll chairs.

Why this works: It's so fresh and stylish. I love the mix of the natural walnut, glossy white acrylic, and chrome lighting. The mix of the textures keeps it warm and playful . Definitely worth the visit.

I'm currently working on a downtown condo for a lovely new client. As an accountant, he lives up to the stereotype in some ways (organized, clean, systematic) but breaks form in others (pink ties, super trendy shoes!).

Textile Tuesday: P is for piping

Piping is an upholstery detail where a chord is covered in fabric and sewn into the seams of the main body. I learned how to do it the summer I worked on MUC and it is a favourite detail of mine. It adds a tailored, yet delicate detail. Done in a contrasting colour- yum yum.

Makeover Monday: Christmas in July

Yes it's summer, and the closest we'll come to snow right now is the kind in the cone- but long lead media peeps are thinking Winter Wonderland as they prepare for the Holiday 09 publications.

So in honour of "Christmas in July" today's makeover Monday features Amanda's House from The Holiday.

Why this works: Amanda's LA home has a consistent colour

palette of soft beige, white and chocolate brown. It's modern, but thanks to the more traditional furniture choices, very soft and comfortable as well. It reads as stylish, casual and very LA (not the uptight part).

How to get this look in your home: Look at every room in your house like a chapter in a book. Each chapter is different, but

you know based on context that they all relate. Pick a colour and

use it as the accent in each room, or pick a motif like a print or graphic to tie

them all together.

Tufting is a method in which a covered button (usually in matching fabric to the main) is threaded through a piece of furniture, allowing the fabric to pucker for added detail. While found in more traditional pieces, here are a few fun modern applications for your decorating pleasure.

OMG, S and B spotted at Berg's after lunch with C & N? Even if you're not up to speed on the Gossip Girl vernacular, you can translate the look of Serena van der Woodsen's chic bedroom in your own home.

Why this works: This set designed by Loren Weeks is a pure translation of the characters rock-n-roll bad girl personality. As I've said it many times on this blog, a good room design not only involves shape, space and colour, but it should be an extension of your personality- it should say something about the fabulous person you are!

With the metallic pillows, mix of vintage furniture pieces and luxe fabrics, this room says this girl has class, taste, and a wicked wardrobe to boot. I am in love with the padded headboard and am dreaming up a DIY project for a client.

There's also a tasteful balance of pattern in this room: the headboard polka dots are smaller than the flowers on the wallpaper above the dresser. If the scale of each motif was the same size it would lose impact.

Busy busy: new projects!

It's been a busy couple of weeks getting back into business with a new business partner (read: my three month old son). But it's been fun- things comming up include:

- a pre-teen bedroom

- a loft style baby's room with an incredible cathedral ceiling

- a downtown condo (with a gorgeous view)

- and a new twist to my Makeover Mondays- check back for the homes of some of Toronto's tastemakers: fashion designers, publicists, magazine editors and more!!!

How cute is this cabinet from DIYideas.com! They took a plain 'ol cabinet, painted it pretty brown (I love it against the pistachio green paint), adhered very mod tiles to it and finished it off with picture matting along the edges.

The resort has a casual yet polished aesthetic, with a lovely palette of orange, green and beige that runs throughout the resort.

How to get this look in your home: Natural elements are key when you want to have a relaxed, seaside feel in your home. While importing tropical birds and dumping sand in your backyard may be a stretch, think incorporating sisal, rattan, wicker, tropical florals and shells inside for a resort worthy look.

Makeover Monday: New York State of Mind

It's no secret I am slightly obsessed with NYC (go Yankees) so for today's Makeover Monday I am paying homage to a local design firm, Lavender & Plum.

Why this works: This SoHo loft is full of unexpected details. While it may not be everyone's inclination to include flocked Le Dome chairs in their living room, it fits the personality of this New York denizen.

Use black and white. The stark contrast of the black and white pieces in this space makes it feel very contemporary and gives the eye a place to rest against the more eclectic touches.

Variety of textures. I love the blend of metallics, luxe fabrics, and warm lighting.

Non traditional eye candy. I just love how refreshing this space is- no beige on beige, no big couch I've seen a hundred times. It reminds me that taking risks is important, and how inspiring it is to see a space that so aptly reflects its owner. Enjoy!

DIY Friday: Mis-match chairs

For today's DIY Friday, I turn to my new favourite magazine: Cookie! Now that I'm a mom, I read mom things- but I was uber excited to stumble on this great DIY project (in between the designer diaper bag article and the article on germs) in the March 2009 issue.

Take all those mismatched chairs you've got in the basement (you know, the one from Craigslist, the two from Grandma, the one off the side of the road) and paint them all a matching colour except for the bottom 12 inches.

The result: a dining room makeover for a gallon of paint. I like it!

For today's Textile Tuesday, we look into the history of damask. Once reserved for formal rooms, modern day applications have become much more daring and not at all unoriginal. They have come a long way from the Islamic and Byzantine weaving centres of the middle ages and now grace our walls, furniture and paper products in daring colours.

Makeover Monday: C'est incroyable

For today's Makeover Monday, I'm featuring this gorgeous home I stumbled upon through Art-Decoration, a design magazine out of France.

While my French comprehension only goes as far as my grade 10 memory serves me, you don't need a translator to comprehend the chic in this home.

Why this works:

Sans ennuyeuse There is nothing boring about the use of white in this space. What keeps it interesting is the variety of textures: the lacquered piano, the high gloss chairs, the natural wood and the transparent light fixture.

Chaque signature est unique Like the great graphic "read" above the bookcases and the unexpected positioning of the bed against a loveseat in the bedroom, original touches add a certain je ne sais quois.

Etre verte de jalouse. Notice how green is used daringly (like the kitchen cabinets) and sparingly (the bamboo and towels in the bathroom). The green is a lovely pop against an otherwise neutral backdrop.

Wayback playback: there's been a whole lot of talk about tie-dye recently. And not the neon scrunchie, jazzy jewels kind. A subdued, sohpisticated approach to dyeing fabrics has permeated fashion and home, adding an organic, international flare to your home and personal style.

Wheather you're sporting ikat (hailing from India, Central America) or shibori (Japanese roots), you're definitely on trend.

Makeover Monday: Emily & Mark's Charming Home

For my first Makeover Monday (posts that will feature inspiring spaces from cleint's homes or my facourite blogs / websites / publications) I'm starting close to home with the home of Emily Walker, House and Home's merchandise designer.

Emily is a fellow Ryerson Fashion alum (and co-worker! We were both dons in residence at Ryerson, back in the day!) and her charming and quirky personality is reflected in her colourful home that she shares with partner Mark Holden (they're an adorable couple).

This is a fabulous home, full of life and personality. I am a big believer that your home should feel like you. Additionally, designer Stacey Smithers has given us lots of good lessons to help in our own decorating persuits.

Lesson #1: PUNCH ME WITH COLOUR. As you can see, a unified palette of greys, purple and yellow has been used throughout the home. But to keep things interesting (and not too psychadelic) colour has been used in moderate proportions. It's a rule I learned from my illustration professor Shelagh Stewart at Ryerson (hi Shelagh!): use 70% of one colour (could be paint, major furniture, linens) 20% of another colour (perhaps pillows, an accent wall, accessories) and 10% of a "surprise" colour (like the yellow TV in Emily's kitchen). It's an approach to decorating that will ensure a heck of a lot of harmony and not one bit of blah.

Lesson #2: UNITY FOR ME. Easpecially in a 900 sqft home like this one (although this rule does not apply to the small) having a sense of unity means each room is connected and flows nicely into the next. In this home, this is acheived with lots of graphics: the great print on the wall in the living room, the dainty bathroom wallpaper, the whimsical floor textile in the bedroom.

Lesson #3: LIGHTEN UP. I am always for humour in decorating. And I don't mean necessarily the obvious kind (like the cute and quirky "I'm Sorry" print in Em's kitchen). Don't be afraid to play with colour, texture, unexpected graphics and personal touches. Even the most demure of designs can be injected with personality- make your home your own!

In Canada, we celebrate a holiday today (thank you Queen Victoria!). We here at Casa Canning enjoyed a great weekend, complete with an impromptu party on Saturday night.

But with the new baby and just moving into our new house, many of our entertaining supplies (platters, vases, etc.) are still in boxes! So we improvised- here are a few ways to make a party look oh-so-chic with oh-so-little time and stress.

Class up your cutlery by placing it in a series of stemless wine glasses.

Spontaneous floral arrangements- I ran outside with a pair of clippers and collected some lilacs. A few went into a stemless wine glass- and the others into empties from my guests at our party!

Create cozy seating areas for comfy conversation- I know I'm breaking a rule by squishing my furniture up against the fireplace (keep it off!), but a good party calls for rule breaking!

One more post on family in honour of mother's day.

For my in-law's 30th wedding anniversary which we celebrated last weekend, we created a cake in their honour- or as mama Canning exclaimed, "It's our life in a cake!" Each tier features photos of times in their life: their wedding, their kids, and their growing number of grandkids. (Look close, their photos are on each tier!)

This was my first attempt at a) baking a cake b) using fondant icing and c) doing this all with a crying infant but for the look on mom and dad Canning's face it was well worth the effort.

Inspiration Folder: David Hicks

Being at home with baby, I've had some time to start designing my own home (which we recently moved into in March and haven't really done too much with as, ahem.. we've been busy!).

In yet another foray into my design textbooks, inspiration folders and on-line resources, I came

across several clippings on David Hicks, a British interior and garden designer who arguably was the bees knees in the 60's and 70's, and whose designs continue to inform designers today.

In a recent Style at Home piece, Toronto designer Timothy Mather describes the Hicks spirit of design as "geometric wallpaper, the incorporation of antiques, and the creative use of colour," elements that speak to my spirit as well.

I've been a fan of Tom Dixon, a British based furniture and lighting designer for a while now (excited to hear him speak at The Spoke Club next Thursday, if baby permits me!). This is uber luxe, and I'm

debating if I like it better as a hanging pendant or the matching table lamps.

Bernina 8 sewing machine

If you do as much crafting and sewing as I do, regular machines just don't cut it (speaking from experience! The machine I bought last summer is already obliterated). This is the Cadillac of sewing machines and I would love it if the sewing machine stork drooped it on my porch.

A night at the Drake Hotel

I've always wanted to stay at the Drake but haven't made enough excuses to do it yet. Boasting eco-friendly attributes and one-of-a-kind vintage design pieces, what a stylish stay the Drake would make (especially for this mommy who loves sleep!).

Pier 1's Ming Chow bench

At $90 this it too good to pass up! I would spray it a fun colour and use it as occasional seating in our living room. Thanks to Michael Penney at House & Home for this find.

Lastly, I would love upholstery lessons at The Workroom. This charming Queen W sewing centre and chic shop offers sewing lessons so you can impress mom with an awesome present next Mother's day!

My husband Josh and I are very proud to announce the birth of our son, baby John Benedict Canning. Born April 4, 8lbs 2 oz. We are so in love!

He's Just Not That Into You: So Into These Interiors!

I took time this weekend to watch the hit romantic comedy He's Just Not That Into You. Not only did it make me laugh (and cry!) I was SO inspired by every interior shot. I am a big fan opf production designer Gae Buckley (who also did What Women Want, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants) and I only wish I had more production stills to share.

Whether you believe in waiting (or not waiting!) by the phone, take alook at these shots and my tips for how to make the look your own!

Gigi's apartment
The look in her space is quirky, not overly styled and screams eclectic femininity. Combine florals, punchy pastels and a pink phone (if you're going to wait by a phone- it might as well be pink!).

A whole lot of chic @ Shabby Chic

In getting ready to move into our new home my mind is buzzing with how to decorate it- will it be modern? bold? colourful? While I have no problem helping my clients understand their own style and communicate that in their home, it's a whole other can of paint when it comes to my own home.

Stumbling on US/web based retailer Shabby Chic gave me loads of inspiration. Here are a few of my favourite pieces (bonus, they ship world wide).

IKEA @ IDS 09: high end looks at wallet friendly prices

It's no secret I use IKEA pieces in many of my design projects (and almost get a thrill off making them look as high end as possible) so I was pleased to see IKEA's model suite at this year's Interior Design show. I've shared my styling tips for how to take assemble yourself pieces and make them look as high end as possible. Enjoy!

1.USE WHITE WITH SPLASHES OF COLOUR
My illustration prof at the Ryerson School of Fashion always said "give them a surprise splash of colour." Using fuchsia and orange against white cabinets and off white printed wallpaper brings your eye into the space and creates an exciting and energetic presence. For more of a calm feel, try your hand at pastels, taupes and greys. For something with loads of va-va-voom, dip your brush into the magentas, cobalts, chartreuses and marigolds.

2. GROUP LIKE ITEMS
I love this little collection on the bedside table. The reflective surface showcases twinkling frames and a spherical lamp. Grouping a collection adds to the variety in a room and when done tastefully (grouping items together by colour, by texture, by style, by type of object) will erase any associations with knick-knack or bric-brack.

3. CLEAN STORAGE PIECES
Nothing cramps style more than a big mess. I always say a successful design must take into account how people live and use the space- and if you can't integrate your collection of vintage bangles or copious scarves into your abode then what's the point. Take inventory of everything that needs to be in the room (don't forget to edit!) plus add 15% for your collection to grow.

4. KITCHEN WITH CA-CHING
Using the most basic IKEA cupboard units is an amazing way to stretch your budget. I am a big fan of adding more expensive hardware and faucets to simple, streamlined units. And to quote fellow blogger Melissa Davis, "no one will question my H&M $29.99 little black dress when I wear it with a pair of Gucci heals and fantastic jewelry." Your kitchen can be a fashionista too!

IDS 09- The Green Guide

While the idea of "going green" and being "eco chic" is by now means new (and by the way, according to the trend forecasting seminar I attended is not leaving us anytime soon), I did find some products and concepts that I wanted to covet- and might make you also (pardon my use of the vernacular) "green" with envy.

Schoolyard is a darling collection of handmade wall decor, linens, baby, sleepwear and paper goods. All their products are printed lovingly by hand using organic materials.

LoVo is the new Low-VOC product by C2 Paint. By using it you're choosing to help reduce the amount of ground-level ozone released into the atmosphere. My favourite part- all 496 of their handcrafted colours come in large (11" x 17") tester swatches. LoVo paint is available at Ontario Paint and Wallpaper or Monarch Paints- if you attended the show, you got a coupon for a free tester pot (all the more reason to attend these shows my friends!).

Marmoleum available at forbo flooring systems is a natural choice for flooring that you can install in a "click!" Made from materials abundant in nature and produced according to an environment-friendly procedure, Marmoleum is hygienic and anti-static, as well as being fully biodegradable after 25 to 40 years’ use.

I am excited about Umbrella Cabinetry. Their products are manufactured locally and they work with suppliers with a similar green ethic. Check out their website for their full range of products/services including indoor/outdoor kitchens and sustainable accessories.

Perhaps one of my favourite finds at IDS this year- Chomalab, all the way from Boston, takes neglected but promising pieces of furniture and gives them a beautiful face lift with new paint, hardware and layers of gorgeous high gloss lacquer. Very reclaimed chic, n'est pas?

IDS 09- adornments for your abode

A common question I get asked is what is one of the most overlooked areas when it comes to home decor- and for me it's definitely in accessories. The small details, similar to the jewelry you pair with an outfit, make a huge difference in the overall finished look of a room. It's all about the details- door handles, light fixtures, nail head details, piping on pillows-that will take your look from boring to ca-ching.

For inspiration, take a look at some of my favourite accessories from this year's Interior Design Show.

Who says your actual accessories can't be used to accessorize your home? From one the 5x5 featured concept spaces, the team at Thomas Pearce showcased "a glamorous private residential fantasy for a power couple". Residential fantasy indeed- the fashionista in me went crazy over a wall of footwear that would make Imelda proud.

A gorgeous hand made mosaic mirror from mosaicworks. It takes mosaic artist Karen Johnston endless hours to create these spectacular pieces- my photo does her work no justice, you must visit her website to see her work shine.

I am in love with this Mme Galet Junior ceramic lamp by Mathias available at Roseland Gallery.
At $629, it comes in several colours and could be an amazing jumping off point for your room's colour scheme.

This incredible chandelier available at Industrial Storm is reminiscent of dripping wax (or something you'd find out of the Phantom of the Opera stage set?). I enjoy the contrast of the organic "melting" next to the clean lines of the table.

This floral print is created out of nail heads fastened to leather. A striking entrance to the showcase space of Thomas Pearce. While time consuming, this could be an amazing DIY project (perhaps the making of a future blog post...stay tuned!).
